Stool Specimen Collection for Culture
Stool samples for microbial or viral culture are collected in clean, sterile containers. Collection with a sterile swab may be acceptable in some situations.
Stool Specimen Collection for Ova and Parasite Testing
The ova and parasite test (O&P) is a microscopic examination of stained fresh or preserved stool to detect the presence of worms or other parasites or their eggs (ova). Stool samples for O&P testing may be added to pre-filled containers that contain preservatives, fixatives, growth media, or stains.
Stool Specimen Collection for Fecal Occult Blood Testing
Fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) is performed to detect blood that can be visually observed. Samples for occult blood testing may be collected using a swab or a gloved finger. The feces are spread on a test surface to which a developer or indicator is added. A color change is a positive result.
Stool Specimen Collection for Chemical Analysis
Stool specimens may also be collected to help detect nutritional or digestive issues. Stool samples are collected in clean containers over a 72-hour period and refrigerated between collections.
